Well-designed wooden windows can preserve or improve a building’s appearance and may be attractive to future buyers, particularly when inappropriate earlier replacements are being corrected. The result depends on the property, design, workmanship and wider market.

Bespoke timber windows generally cost more initially than mass-produced standard units because each item is designed, made, finished and fitted for a particular opening. Cost depends on size, design, glazing, hardware, finish, access and the number of items required.

We provide a project-specific quotation so you can see what is included. Durability, repairability, maintenance and how well the work suits the building are also worth considering alongside the initial price.

Lead times depend on our current workshop programme and the scale and specification of the work. Design decisions, Listed Building Consent, chosen hardware, specialist glazing and the number of items can all affect the programme. Some work may be possible within six to eight weeks, but busy periods and larger projects can take considerably longer. We will discuss the likely timing once we understand your project and avoid making a fixed promise before then.

Our standard specification is a workshop-applied primer followed by two top coats. Applying the finish in our spray booth gives controlled coverage before the joinery reaches the property. We use Teknos coatings and will confirm the precise finish in your quotation.

There is a wide choice. Through the Teknos colour system we can match colours from Farrow & Ball, Little Greene, British Standard and other ranges. The frame and opening item can be different colours, while a dual-colour finish—one colour internally and another externally—is available at additional cost because it requires more work.

As a general maintenance guide, painted joinery may need attention after roughly five to ten years and stained joinery after roughly three to five years. Exposure, colour, building orientation, local conditions, cleaning and maintenance can all shorten or extend those intervals. They are inspection and maintenance guides, not guarantees that no work will be required during that period.

Good maintenance is normally a matter of inspecting the coating, cleaning the surface and dealing with minor deterioration before it becomes extensive. Preparation and application must follow the coating manufacturer’s guidance. The amount of work depends on the condition of the existing finish, so it is better to maintain it in good time than wait for bare timber to become exposed.

Yes. Although a complete workshop-applied finish is standard, we can supply joinery raw, primed only, or with primer and one top coat where the project requires it. We will make clear what protection and finishing will be needed after delivery or fitting.

Service life depends on the timber, design, manufacture, installation, exposure and maintenance. Most of our windows and doors are made from Accoya. For qualifying above-ground applications, Accoya carries a 50-year manufacturer’s warranty against rot and decay, subject to its terms. That is a material warranty rather than a promise covering the complete window, finish, glazing, hardware or installation for 50 years.

Installation is completed by our employed fitters and trusted regular subcontract fitters working under Collins & Hall’s direction. Some of the subcontractors previously worked directly for us and continue to provide fitting time through their own small businesses. We plan and oversee the installation rather than passing the project to an unrelated window company.

Payments are staged as the project moves through design, manufacture and installation. A small initial deposit—normally 1–2%—covers administration and secures a place in our manufacturing programme.

At final design, immediately before manufacture, we invoice 50% of the manufacturing estimate less the initial deposit. The balance of manufacture, including agreed specification or hardware adjustments, is invoiced when the joinery is complete. We then order the made-to-measure glazing units and begin finishing. Installation is invoiced after fitting. Your quotation and project documents will confirm the exact amounts and terms that apply to your work.

Yes. We design and manufacture our timber windows and wooden doors in our own workshop in Netherton, near Huddersfield. We also normally apply the finish there. Glazing units and specialist hardware are made by the appropriate suppliers to our specification, then incorporated into the finished joinery.

Yes. We undertake work ranging from a single replacement window or entrance door to new joinery throughout a large property. The scale, location and specification all influence timing and cost, but you do not need a whole-house project to contact us.

Usually, yes. We can survey existing joinery and reproduce proportions, mouldings, glazing bars, panels and other characterful details where appropriate. We can also work from architects’ drawings or help develop a new design. Listed buildings and conservation areas may require consent before changes are made.

Yes. We have managed Listed Building Consent applications for many customers. We can gather information, prepare and submit drawings and supporting documents, manage the application and communicate with the relevant conservation or planning officers.

We cannot guarantee approval because the final decision belongs to the local authority, but we understand the process and work towards the best practical solution for the customer and the building.

Low-E double glazing is our standard. Each sealed unit is ordered to suit the completed joinery. The precise glass specification can be adapted for matters such as safety, privacy, appearance and other project requirements.

Often, yes. We work with stained-glass specialists who can clean, resize and encapsulate existing decorative glass within a new sealed double-glazed unit. New stained glass can also be commissioned and encapsulated. The glass needs to be assessed before we can confirm what is practical.

Most of our windows and doors are made from Accoya because of its stability, durability and resistance to rot. We can use other timbers where the design, building or customer requires them. All the timber we use comes from FSC-certified sources.

Hardware is selected to suit the product, appearance, use, exposure and security requirements. Coastal Group is our principal supplier. We also provide products from From The Anvil—many through Coastal—and use Mighton for sliding sash work. We can source alternatives where those ranges do not provide the right item.

Different parts of the project have different cover. Collins & Hall’s current guarantee provides 12 months for manufacture and 12 months for fitting. Our regular sealed glazing units carry a five-year supplier guarantee against failure of the hermetic seal that causes misting between the panes, subject to the supplier’s terms.

Accoya and individual hardware products have their own manufacturer warranties, conditions and exclusions. These can vary by material, component and finish, and supplier warranties may cover a replacement component without covering the labour needed to fit it. We will provide the relevant terms for the products specified on your project.

Most of our work is within approximately 30 to 60 minutes of our Netherton workshop, covering Huddersfield, West Yorkshire and surrounding areas. We also travel further for suitable projects and have undertaken work towards Manchester, Sheffield, Hull and the Yorkshire Dales. Distance may affect whether a project is practical, so please contact us with the property location.
